Working from home without a work-issued laptop

In rare circumstances such as COVID-19, you may be required to work from home but IT may not have enough spare laptops to give out. In this case, it is recommended to work from your personal devices if possible. IT will provide remote support for work related activities under these circumstances (see Remote User Support Policy).

Accessing Email, Files, etc

Luckily, most of the work that we do for Southland is done via web applications. This means that it's possible to access your work from anywhere. Email and files can all be accessed at https://office.com; just login with your email and the same password that you use for your work computer. If you are using any specific web applications other than Office 365, just navigate to them in your web browser the same as you would on your work computer.

Non Web-Based Apps

If there are any apps that you require for your job that aren't web-based (ie: they need to be installed on your computer) email help@mysouthland.com and they will help figure out a solution for you.

Syncing OneDrive files to your personal computer

Syncing or downloading your work files to your personal computer is prohibited. All work must be done inside of web applications when using personal devices to prevent Southland property from ending up on non-Southland owned devices.

Network Drives

If you need to access Network Drives (ie: Pictures, Graphics, Video) for your job, IT will have to supply you with a temporary laptop to take home. We cannot provide remote access to Network Files on personal devices.

Printing

We cannot support printing on your personal printer. If you need to print for work, you will need to go into the office.

Working from phones or tablets

Working from your personal phone or tablet might be a good solution in the case that you are forced to work from home. Mobile apps are available for all Microsoft Office 365 functions and can be installed on personal mobile devices.
